On January 16, 2025, the Coalition organized a special program on “the Impact of Immigration on U.S.-born Workers.” This topic is not a new one. It has stimulated discussion throughout American history and deserves careful attention today. Under what circumstances does immigration strengthen the overall economy, including the job prospects and earnings levels of American workers? And when might immigration harm the interests of U.S.-born workers?
The keynote speaker for the program was Professor Exequiel (Zeke) Hernandez of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Prof. Hernandez is an award-winning scholar who has spent his career studying how immigrants affect our lives and our livelihoods. He has won numerous emerging scholar awards, and his recent book entitled “The Truth About Immigration” has received glowing reviews. His research is filled with results that will surprise both liberals and conservatives.
Prof. Hernandez concludes that America needs more immigrants. Cutting through the noise and misinformation that colors this debate, Hernandez details data and moving personal stories to show how immigrants of all backgrounds and skill levels drive investment, innovation, and jobs; do essential work that Americans shy away from; create widespread economic gains; and make our cities and communities stronger and safer.
Dr. Hernandez’s talk was followed by a panel discussion, featuring representatives from a select group of New Jersey industry representatives and labor specialists, including: Megan Chambers, President of the New Jersey State Council of the SEIU; Ramya Vijali, Professor of Economics at Stockton University; Lori Jenssen, Executive Director of the New Jersey Nursery & Landscape Association; and Michele Siekerka, President & CEO of the New Jersey Business & Industry Association. Panel members provided important insight into labor conditions in New Jersey and the extent to which our state must rely on immigrant labor in the future.
The 90-minute program was sponsored by the law firm of Genova Burns.
